This is where we share plain-language explainers on the EU Digital Identity Wallet, the eIDAS 2.0 regulation, and what they actually mean for webshops — from wallet login to verified checkout data.
We track the EU's timeline toward mandatory wallet support in 2026 and translate the underlying technical standards, like OpenID4VP and DCQL, into practical steps for Magento, WooCommerce and Shopify stores.
What is eIDAS 2.0?
eIDAS 2.0 is the European Union's 2024 update to its electronic identification and trust services regulation. It creates the legal basis for the European Digital Identity Wallet: a free, government-issued app every EU citizen and resident will be able to use to prove who they are and share verified personal data online.
For webshops, eIDAS 2.0 matters because it standardises how identity and address data can be requested and verified at login and checkout — replacing manual forms with a single, cryptographically signed exchange between the wallet and the merchant's site.
What is the EU Digital Identity Wallet?
A mobile app, issued by an EU member state, that stores verified identity attributes — name, date of birth, address — and other credentials such as a diploma or driving licence, and lets the holder share them selectively and securely.
Do webshops have to support the EU Digital Identity Wallet?
Not by law. Acceptance is mandatory only for very large online platforms and public-sector services once national wallets roll out. For webshops, adoption is voluntary today, but early support is a meaningful differentiator as consumer usage grows.
How does wallet login work technically?
Wallet login uses the OpenID4VP protocol. The webshop sends a query (via DCQL) for the specific attributes it needs, the customer's wallet app shows a consent screen, and on approval it returns a cryptographically signed credential the webshop can trust immediately — no password, no manual form. When will the EU Digital Identity Wallet be available?
Under the regulation, every EU member state must offer at least one wallet to its citizens and residents by 2026. Rollout timing differs per country as national wallets are built and certified.
Roadmap to 2026
Original eIDAS Regulation: EU-wide rules for e-signatures and cross-border trust services.
eIDAS 2.0 enters into force: Regulation (EU) 2024/1183 creates the legal framework for the European Digital Identity Wallet.
Technical standards finalised: the European Commission adopts implementing acts defining the Wallet's architecture and reference framework.
Wallets go live: every EU member state must offer at least one Digital Identity Wallet to its citizens and residents.
Adoption grows: very large platforms and public services must accept the wallet; webshops that integrate early get ahead of consumer demand.
