A wallet app for every EU citizen
The EU Digital Identity Wallet (EUDI Wallet) is a mobile app that lets citizens of the European Union prove their identity and other personal attributes digitally — to government bodies, but also to private parties such as webshops, banks and rental companies. The wallet is part of the eIDAS 2.0 regulation (Regulation (EU) 2024/1183), which requires member states to offer a wallet to their citizens by the end of 2026.
What can a customer do with it?
Instead of creating an account with a password, a customer can use the wallet to prove who they are and that their data is correct: name, date of birth, address, email address. This data is verified by a recognised issuer — a government body, for example — and cryptographically signed. The customer decides, per request, exactly what data to share.
What does this mean for webshops?
For e-commerce, this opens up a faster way to let customers log in, register and check out. Instead of a long registration form, the customer scans or confirms a request in their wallet app, and the shop instantly receives verified name and address data. That means fewer typos, less friction at checkout, and less fraud, since data is no longer typed in by the customer but supplied cryptographically.
